On March 27,
1925, nineteen people began
meeting at the home of Mr. Jacob
Fisher with Rev. C. B. Jernigan,
the Superintendent of the New
York District of the Nazarene
Church. After much prayer and
several temporary locations, a
more permanent place of worship
was built at 44 Columbia Avenue.
The building was dedicated on
July 18, 1926 and was the home
of the First Church of the
Nazarene for nineteen years. The
church grew considerably and was
a strong Gospel witness in
Rochester
In June of
1945, the church purchased
property on the corner of
Plymouth Avenue and Flint Street
since they had outgrown the
building on Columbia Avenue.
Work began on the new building
in September of 1948 and after
two years of manual labor and
many sacrifices by the
congregation, the new church was
dedicated on July 15, 1951. In
the spring of 1955, the church
received an offer for the
purchase of the new building.
After much consideration, the
people voted to accept the
offer. In March of 1956,
construction began on a church
building at East Henrietta Road
and South Avenue.
The new
church on East Henrietta Road
was completed in the fall of
1956, and in November the
congregation adopted the name
Calvary Church of the Nazarene.
The building was dedicated on
May 5, 1957. In December of
1974, the congregation purchased
adjoining property for a new
sanctuary, which was completed
in 1978.
Sixteen years
later, on August 14, 1994, the
congregation of Calvary decided
to sell their building and
relocate to 4045 East Henrietta
Road. The former building was
sold to the Reynolds Street
Church of God, and Calvary
Church met temporarily for
worship at the Good Shepard
Church on East Henrietta Road.
Ground was broken for the new
building in the fall of 1995,
and the name Calvary Community
Church of the Nazarene was
adopted. On September 15, 1996,
we dedicated this building to
the Lord’s glory and service.
The Lord has blessed the
ministry of Calvary Community
Church. The congregation is
growing as people discover a
life-changing relationship with
God through Jesus Christ.
